Availability of Arrival Records in HIAS Offices, 1953-1954
Scope and Contents
This series contains incomplete chronological lists of ship arrivals and passenger lists (including ships for Displaced Persons also known as DPs) for the years 1904 to 1958, as well as correspondence regarding arrivals and passengers. Ship arrivals are recorded in ledgers, listing boats and their arrival and departure dates at various ports. Passenger lists are also recorded in ledgers, often including the passenger’s name, number, country, religion, age, sex, marital status, and profession. Some include the name of their American sponsor and address of destination. Correspondence includes inquiries into specific passenger arrivals, lost baggage, and secretarial notes, via letters or telegraphs. There is also communication between the New York and Boston HIAS offices regarding procedures for arrivals. Additionally, there is one folder containing correspondence and lists of the availability of records in HIAS offices nationwide from 1953 to 1954.
