Series III: Stop & Shop, undated, 1946-1989
Scope and Contents
This series includes textual materials relating to the operations of Stop & Shop, Inc., starting from the official company name change in1947 and ending before the 1988 buyout of the company. The series contains advertisements, employee training and policy information, minutes, newsletters, shareholder reports, reports on minipricing, and memos regarding consumer affairs, public relations, and real estate. The series also contains a great deal of information about the Marlborough Meat Processing Facility, including newspaper clippings, public relations, and a case study examining the successes and failures of the operation. Also included are materials relating to the Readville distribution center, including a time capsule that was buried with the building’s cornerstone in 1959. Among other things, the time capsule includes a sealed can of Stop & Shop coffee.
Also included in this series is information about the history of Stop & Shop, including two compilations of miscellaneous background materials. These materials include historical sketches, anecdotes, store listings, memos, correspondence, and news clippings. Box 5 contains a photocopy of an album documenting Stop & Shop history; the original was dismantled and can be found in the photograph series.
