American Jewish Historical Society: Museum Correspondence, 1995
Scope and Contents
This subseries includes documents describing the activities of the Wyner family in a variety of national organizations, some with international significance. Of special interest is Justin's involvement with the American Jewish Historical Society, first as a member of the Board of Trustees (1987-1992), then as its President from 1993-1998 and finally as Chair of the Boston Board of Overseers of the New England Collections. During his presidency, Justin instituted and was a member of the committee for "Restoring Preeminence" to the Society after several years of decline in membership and financial stability. The documents in this section include correspondence, finance and budget reports, and committee minutes which describe how the Preeminence Committee re-examined its mission and worked towards developing new tactics in order to regain the Society's world standing as the repository for American Jewish historical documents. Other materials in this section discuss a wide variety of topics concerned with the daily operations of the Society.
Also included in this sub-series are records chronicling Justin and Genevieve's involvement with the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, specifically during their respective presidencies of Temple Israel in Brookline, Massachusetts. Also included here are documents concerning Hebrew Union College, where Justin was director of the Union from 1979-1982, and which contains a report of the Task Force for Reform Judaism. Other documents of interest in this sub-series concern the New Israel Fund and include various political memorabilia recounting Justin's involvement with the Republicans' For McCarthy organization in 1968, and for which he was its national chairman.
