 File — Box: 58, Folder: 1-16

Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

Subseries III contain the records of local Jewish organizations with which various Wyner family members were actively involved. Included here are records of the Adath Jeshurun Synagogue and Cemetery Association, most of which document financial transactions, such as investments and annual reports, financial statements and income taxes, although not all inclusive, covers the years 1975-1992. Of special interest is a history of the congregation by Richard Heath, dated 1991.

Also included in this sub-series are by-laws of the Women's Division of the Associated Jewish Philanthropies (AJP, 1932) and a July 1930 copy of the Associated News, both from the years Gussie Wyner was a member of AJP. In addition, there is limited documentation of the United Palestine Appeal-Boston, Women's Division concerning the Donors Committee and includes correspondence to Gussie Wyner who was a member along with a receipt booklet for the Jewish National Fund both dated 1926. Of particular interest are documents that describe Gussie Wyner's involvement with the Women's Auxiliary of Beth Israel Hospital, where she served as Treasurer and for which she proposed the concept of the Life Membership Fund to raise much needed capital for hospital improvements. This concept became a role model used by other charitable organizations across the United States for soliciting long term funding. The documents concerning Gussie Wyner and the Beth Israel Hospital are dated 1926-1933 and also include a Beth Israel Hospital School of Nursing Program in which Gussie is listed as assisting with graduation exercises and where she presented pins to the graduating nurses.

Other documents in this sub-series describe the activities of Rudolph Wyner while he was president of Beth Israel Hospital of Boston (BI), and Justin Wyner's involvement with the hospital in the capacity of Trustee and as a member of the Finance Committee (Chair, 1988). The documents primarily describe Board of Trustee business, nominations to the Board, meeting minutes, issues concerning securities investments and committee assignments. Of particular interest are financial documents, including budget reports, financial statements and investment portfolios addressing Beth Israel Hospital, Temple Israel and the Combined Jewish Philanthropies together and dated 1994. Other documents in this sub-series include BI programs and invitations to a variety of annual breakfasts and dinners, as well as annual reports of the Board of Managers (1985-1994) and Board of Trustees finance reports (1977-1994) as well as miscellaneous materials for other hospital committees on which Justin Wyner served from 1977-1994.

This subseries also includes various documents describing Genevieve Wyner's activities in the Spiritual Chaplaincy Services at the Beth Israel Hospital as a Volunteer Pastoral Visitor, offering patients and their family's emotional and spiritual support during times of illness.
