Leo Levine Papers

Abstract Leo Levine was born Leizers Levins in Riga, Latvia, on September 30, 1907. He worked as a European war correspondent until the outbreak of World War II. After immigrating to Dorchester circa 1941, Levine wrote freelance newspaper columns about the war, including several that were published in St. John’s, Newfoundland’s The Telegram. Abstract Leopold (Leo) Shapiro was born in Paris, France, in 1907 and emigrated with his parents and brother, Jacques, to Roxbury, Boston, Massachusetts, when he was 8 years old. Originally from Salem, Massachusetts, Louis Winer received both his undergraduate and law degree from Boston University. Admitted to the bar in 1916, the outbreak of World War I interrupted his law career, as Winer served in the American Expeditionary Forces in France. Mary Wolfman Epstein Papers

Mary Wolfman Epstein was a singer, playwright, director, vocal teacher, and talent manager in the Boston area. Epstein worked with many Jewish and secular organizations, and she co-founded the New England Jewish Music Forum. She wrote over 30 original musicals, most of which were based on Jewish themes or individuals. Max Rubinstein Papers

Max Rubinstein was a World War II Army veteran who was an active member of the Jewish War Veterans (JWV), Post 486 in Beverly, Massachusetts. He served as Post Commander of Post 486 from its founding in 1946 to 1949, and then as State Commander for Massachusetts Jewish War Veterans in 1951. This collections contains financial, administrative, and membership records from both the national JWV and JWV Post 486, and some of Rubinstein's personal and business papers.
