Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of one ledger of members from the congregation's Mishna study group. The congregation's constitution and by-laws are in the front of the ledger. The ledger dates from 1909-1910, but some of the entries have annotations indicating the date when a member has died and some of these dates are from several decades later.

Historical Note

Congregation Beth Hamedrash Hagadol Anshe Sfard was founded by a community of Jews from Lithuania in Boston's West End in 1896. From 1896-1900, the synagogue was located on Poplar Street. The community then moved to North Russell Street. In 1941, Congregation Beth Hamedrash Hagadol Anshe Sfard and Congregation Beth Jacob merged to become Congregation Beth Hamedrash Hagadol Beth Jacob, still located in the same building on North Russell Street.

Abstract

This collection contains a ledger from Congregation Beth Hamedrash Hagadol Anshe Sfard in Boston, Mass. The ledger, written in Hebrew, is from the Chevra Mishnayos (Mishna study group) of the congregation. It contains the constitution and by-laws as well as the names of the original members (both men and women) of the study group. Besides some of the names, there is either a date of death or an indication that the person died. Some of these dates of death are many years after the date of the ledger.
