Historical Note

Congregation Tifereth Israel was founded in Revere, Massachusetts in 1912 by a group of Orthodox Jewish immigrants from Lithuania. The congregation took over a former Methodist church at the corner of Shirley and Nahant Avenues and flourished into the mid-20th century, becoming the largest synagogue in Revere for a time.

Starting in the 1960s, demographic shifts led to a loss of membership, as the children of the mostly working-class Jewish immigrants in the area prospered and moved to other towns around Boston. The synagogue closed in 2015 due to low membership, and the building was sold and demolished in 2017. The proceeds from the sale went toward the continued operation of the congregation’s two cemeteries, located in Everett, Massachusetts.
