Congregation Adath Israel (Newtown, Conn.) Records

Abstract

Congregation Adath Israel was established in 1919 by a small group of Jewish farmers in Newtown, Connecticut. The synagogue expanded its building in 1957 and converted from the Orthodox movement to the Conservative movement in the 1970s. In 2007, they relocated to a larger building within Newtown. The collection primarily consists of administrative and financial records, along with newspaper clippings, photographs, and miscellaneous documents.

Abstract In 1911, Congregation Agudas Achim Anshei Sfard, more commonly known as the Adams Street Shul, was granted an official charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. By December of the following year, the building was opened to the public. While there was a lull in membership starting in the ’50s, by the mid to late ’80s, more young Jewish families moved to the area, spurring efforts to revitalize the building. Abstract Congregation Agudas Sholom or Agudath Shalom (known colloquially as the Walnut Street Shul or Synagogue) was chartered in 1887 by a minyan as Ohabei Shalom of Chelsea. In 1901, the congregation purchased a property at Walnut St and 5th. Congregation Beth Israel was founded in 1843 and is Connecticut's oldest synagogue.
