Steven Kellerman Synagogue Photographs Collection
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains mostly 8x10 black and white photographs of synagogues and other buildings of note, taken by Steven Kellerman, in 1981 and 1985. Also included are several 3x5 and 4x6 color photographs of synagogues. The collection also contains exhibit flyers and pamphlets, brochures for various local synagogues, and newspaper articles pertaining to the exhibit, synagogues, correspondence regarding exhibits, and articles about the history and architecture of synagogues. The photographs are a resource for researchers studying the history of Boston’s Jewish community and the migration of Jewish neighborhoods from the Dorchester, Mattapan and Roxbury areas to the suburbs of Newton and Brookline. Those interested in the architectural history of synagogues would also benefit from this photograph collection.

Biographical / Historical
At the time these photographs were taken (1981 and 1985), Steven Kellerman was a machinist with an interest in synagogue history. This particular collection of photographs started with Kellerman’s visits to former synagogues in Dorchester and Roxbury, Massachusetts; the project expanded to include most of Massachusetts and other states. The photographs were used in an exhibit at the Frager Jewish Student Center in 1992, as well as several Jewish Community Centers, the Workmen’s Circle Yiddish Culture Festival, synagogues, and the Synagogue Council of Massachusetts. Along with David Kaufman, then a Ph.D. student at Brandeis University, Kellerman spoke at various events about the significance of synagogue architecture throughout history and the relationship between the Jewish community and their shuls.
