Historical Note

Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, is a women’s volunteer organization founded in 1912 by Henrietta Szold. It is one of the largest international Jewish organizations and promotes health education, social action and advocacy, volunteerism, Jewish education and research, and connections with Israel.

The Lynn Hadassah was founded in 1922. It had ten members, known as the Lynn Senior Hadassah. Marion Goldman served as president, and their first projects mainly involved sewing and knitting. By the end of the second year, it had grown to 100 members, with women joining from Saugus, Nahant, Swampscott, and Marblehead. In 1947, because of the growth in membership, a separate chapter, the Swamspscott-Marblehead Hadassah, was formed. The Salem-Beverly-Danvers Hadassah chapter (originally the Salem-Beverly Hadassah) was also formed prior to 1959. In 1991, the Lynn chapter merged with the North Shore Business and Professional Group.
